Tens of thousands of dollars in scholarship money and prizes will be available to medical, dental, and other professional degree students who earn one of the 10 scholarships we're awarding. Here's what you need to know.
Purpose of the WCI Medical School Scholarship
We're very grateful for the financial success that The White Coat Investor has seen. Although WCI has always been a for-profit business, its primary purpose is to “help those who wear the white coat get a fair shake.” The White Coat Investor Medical School Scholarship is a way for the entire WCI community to “pay it forward.” This community includes blog readers, podcast listeners, Facebook Group and WCI Forum members, WCI redditors, sponsors, staff, and owners.
The scholarship has no endowment fund so the scholarship money is raised anew every year. The purpose of the scholarship is to directly reduce the indebtedness of a few students and to promote financial literacy in professional schools.
Applications will be accepted from June 1 through August 31, 2025.
Important Application Information
Who Can Apply?
Only professional students enrolled full-time in a professional school located in the United States for the 2025-2026 year and who are verified to be in good academic standing are eligible. That means medicine, osteopathic medicine, podiatry, dentistry, law, pharmacy, optometry, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, CRNA, anesthesiologist assistant, or veterinarian. We will also consider physical therapy and occupational therapy students if the program leads to a doctorate degree.
- No online schools (brick and mortar only).
- No undergraduates.
- If you have already received scholarships equal to or greater than the cost of tuition at your school, you are not eligible.
- No residents, even if you’re a dental resident paying tuition. Students only.
- Students in Puerto Rico cannot apply.
What Does an Application Consist Of?
You will need to fill out the application, which will ask for your name, school, email address, and similar information. You will then be required to submit an 800-1,200 word essay written in English. The word count is STRICTLY enforced. If you are over or under the word count, your essay will be disqualified. You may not attach a Word document. It must be pasted directly into the application. Emailed submissions will not be accepted. If you win, your essay will be published on The White Coat Investor blog. Submitting an application is considered your agreement to having your essay published along with your name and picture. No anonymous entries.
Essay Topic
Submit an essay that fits the topic of an “Inspiring Story.” In past years, we have had multiple essay topic categories, but this year there will only be one category. Ten winners will be selected with the prize money being evenly divided.
Inspiring Stories are true stories about you, your family, and your background; why it has led you into your profession; and how it will affect your career. Perhaps the essay details an experience that happened to you in school that others would find humorous, interesting, or inspiring. Extra points will be given if there is a financial component to your essay.

2025 Prize Money
Once again, we're going to keep the prize money simple. There will be 10 winners, and we're going to split the prize money between all of them equally. Each winner will also receive a WCI T-shirt, a WCI insulated water bottle, the WCI Financial Wellness and Burnout Prevention for Medical Professionals Course, a WCI Guide for Students Book, and a Personal Finance Bundle from Making Your Money Matter. WCI will cover all of the expenses of running the scholarship and the cost of the WCI gear and books. The prize money comes from three places:
- $25,000 from The White Coat Investor

Rules/FAQ
When Can I Submit My Application?
The application period opened on June 1. The final date for submission is August 31, 2025. Don't procrastinate.
In 2024, we had a record 1,190 applications, smashing the previous record of 990 in 2023. This won't be an easy competition.
What Should I Write About?
Inspiring Stories are true stories about you, your family, and your background; why it has led you into your profession; and how it will affect your career. Perhaps the essay details an experience that happened to you in school that others would find humorous, interesting, or inspiring. Extra points will be given if there is a financial component to your essay.
Judges will be instructed to give some credit for the quality of the writing. The better the writing, the better your chance to win. Remember, your essay must be between 800-1,200 words. Too many or too few, and we'll just throw it out.
Can I Submit Anonymously?
No. Your name and photo will be published along with your essay if you are selected as one of the 10 winners. If you do not feel comfortable with that, don't apply for the scholarship. No exceptions.
How Can I Help Spread the Word?
Please download and post our flyer and email it to everyone you can think of!
When Will the Winners Be Announced?
We anticipate announcing all 10 winners in October on The White Coat Investor blog, although the winners will likely find out the week before when they are asked to send us a headshot picture. We'll also send out an email to all applicants to let them know the winners. We'll also use your email to sign you up to get the monthly WCI Newsletter. Don't worry: it's free and you can unsubscribe at any time. But if you unsubscribe from everything we send you (the nuclear unsubscribe button), you won't get that email announcing the winners.
How Does the Selection Process Work?
You can be assured that if you do not follow the directions contained on this page, you will not be selected as a finalist. English. Proofread. 800-1,200 words. If you are chosen as a winner, we will verify your attendance and good standing.
There will be three rounds of judging. WCI staff will not be doing any of it. WCI readers and listeners who volunteer to judge will be randomly assigned to their essays.
How Much Cash Has Been Raised So Far?
We will update this page as the contest goes on to let you know the current size of the grand prize pot. The more readers and listeners who donate, the larger the scholarship will be. Currently, the total raised is $56,650 in cash, plus prizes.
Over the last 10 years, we have given away a total of $543,411 in cash, plus tens of thousands of dollars in prizes.
Is the Prize Money Taxable?
It depends on how the winners use the money.
Generally speaking, a scholarship or fellowship is tax-free if you are a degree candidate and if the award is used to pay for tuition and required fees, books, supplies, and equipment. However, there are some scholarship and fellowship opportunities that are not tax-exempt. Any amounts used to pay for room and board and a stipend for living expenses are taxable.
If you received a taxable scholarship or fellowship that was not reported to the IRS on a W-2 or 1099 form, you are required to include it on line 7 and write “SCH” to the left. If you report taxable scholarship or fellowship income in this fashion, it is wise to attach an explanatory letter to your return, especially if you exclude any required educational expenses.
How Can I Volunteer to Be a Judge?
We expect hundreds of submissions, and since the WCI staff won’t be doing any screening to eliminate bias, we’re going to need a lot of judges. If you are a working or retired professional (no students or residents) and would be willing to read and rank several 1,000-word essays in a timely manner at some point in September, please send an email to [email protected] with the words “Volunteer Judge” in the subject line. You’ll have a few days for the task but not a few weeks. If you discover you cannot fulfill this duty at any point, please advise us ASAP so we can find someone else.
Are My Donations Tax-Deductible?
Neither The White Coat Investor nor the scholarship is a registered charity, and donations are not deductible as a charitable contribution. Donations may be deductible to you as a business expense, however.
How Can I Contribute?
We can take contributions most easily via PayPal to [email protected] (use the “send money to friends and family” option to maximize your contribution). You can also send checks to:
Scholarship Fund
The White Coat Investor, LLC
P.O. Box 520421
Salt Lake City, Utah
84152-0421
The entire amount donated will be given to the winning applicants. We cover all the expenses of administering the scholarship.
What Do Corporate Sponsors Get for Sponsoring the Scholarship?
Aside from knowing you are helping The White Coat Investor, LLC to fulfill its important mission, each successive level of sponsorship comes with more perks (primarily advertising benefits). If you are interested in becoming a Platinum, Gold, or Silver level sponsor, contact [email protected] for details. You will notice some sponsored posts on the blog this summer as part of the Platinum sponsorship package.

Good afternoon! I was wondering if there is any update on the 2023 WCI Scholarship selection announcement date? I am looking forward to reading about all of the amazing things these students are doing!
Question answered! I must’ve skipped a page of the comment thread. Sorry about that!
Will the winners be notified ahead of time or at the same time the blog post is made?
These questions remind me of my kids that say they like surprises when it comes to birthday and Christmas presents but really don’t. We don’t intentionally notify winners, but we do ask for their pictures to run on the announcement post. We also verify enrollment in good standing with their schools, so it usually isn’t a surprise to them. I’m guessing that’s bad news for you given that the end of October is coming soon and you’re asking this question but I honestly don’t know where we’re at in the process of verifying and getting pictures.
Hello! I was wondering if it is possible to receive feedback about the essay I submitted and also to see its ranking. Thank you for offering the scholarship this year and congratulations to the winners.
Sorry, not a service we offer. I’m sure we could dig through 1000 essays and figure out what round each was eliminated in, but that’s an awful lot of work just to give feedback to the 99% that didn’t win. It would be time and effort we couldn’t put toward something else important.
Are there plans for this scholarship for 2024-2025? And to clarify, can incoming accepted medical students apply? Thank you. 🙂
If we do a scholarship in 2024 (which we probably will) we’ll announce it in June 2024 and it’ll be for those who are enrolled full time in good standing in 2024-2025.
In the qualifications for applying, you mention “full scholarship.” Does that refer to a full-ride scholarship?
Yes. If you’ve already got a scholarship paying for all of your tuition or even more, we’d rather award the scholarship money to someone who doesn’t.
Hi,
I have a full tuition scholarship for medical school, is it possible for me to apply for the scholarship for living expenses?
No, it wouldn’t be appropriate for you to apply. This one is for your classmates. Congrats on the scholarship you already have though!
My program (DPT) begins in January 2025. I will be a full time enrolled student at that point? Am I eligible to apply in this round? Or will I need to wait until next year?
You’ll need to wait, sorry!
Does the essay have to follow a strict essay format or can we write it in a creative genre like a screenplay or including an excerpt of poetry?
The only requirements are the word limit and that it be in English.
Are past winners eligible to reapply for a category they did not win in? For example, if someone won based on their financial story, can they reapply for inspiring stories?
No, sorry!
Can first-year professional school students apply since one of the criteria is to be in “good academic standing”?
It’s hard to not be in good academic standing just a few weeks in, so yes, first years are almost always eligible.
Hello! Is it necessary or advisable to put citations in the essay? Also, is there any way I can italicize words in the submission area? Thank you!
No idea if judges will be impressed with either of those formatting issues or not. Too late now I suppose anyway. Good luck!
Hi, I recently submitted my application for 2024, but just saw in my application I put my DOB and not my date of graduation. My date of graduation is October 20, 2027.
We’ll probably be able to sort it out. Maybe send an email to scholarship at whitecoatinvestor.com explaining.
Hi! an scholarship money be used for room and board or living expenses (instead of tuition)?
Can*
Yes. It’s just as check we send to the winners. But you can’t apply again until next year.
Hello I was wondering when scholarship winners will be announced for this cycle? Thank you!
I was wondering the same!
Aiming for end of October.
Is Masters in Medical Physics Program eligible for this Scholarship ?
My initial thought is that isn’t “professional school” in most senses of that word so no.
Hello, I was wondering when the 2025 cycle for this scholarship will open up?
You’ll be able to submit your application between June 1st and August 31st like prior years.
Hello! I didn’t see any U.S. citizenship requirements, so I was wondering if international students on F1 visas are eligible to apply? Given they are enrolled in a professional school located in the United States.
The requirement is enrollment in a US brick and mortar professional school. There is no citizenship requirement.
Hello,
I was wondering if incoming medical students starting their first year in August can qualify for the WCI Scholarship?
Thank you!
Yes.
Hello! I hope you are doing well. I know the scholarship is supposed to be opening today, however, I am having trouble opening the application. Do you think you could please help me with locating the application please?
Thank you in advance!
Best,
Ale
We’ll take a look and see if we can figure out what’s going on.
On this main page, it says we are eligible as long as we are enrolled from 2025 to 2026. However, once I go into the application, it says we have to have been enrolled from 2024 to 2025. There seems to be some controversy there. I am starting medical school in August and have an acceptance letter. I will be enrolled from 2025 to 2026. Am I eligible for the contest?
Sounds like we need to update the application. It’s definitely 2025-2026. You’re eligible.
Can an incoming medical student apply?
If they will be full time enrolled this Fall, yes.
Can an incoming medical student starting this Fall apply?
Yes.We verify attendance in early October.
At the end of the application it states ” I certify that I am a student enrolled full-time in a professional school located in the United States for the 2024-2025 year” but I will start school in the Fall of 2025. I am a bit confused by this question because at the beginning of the scholarship it says for students enrolled in a professional school for the 2025-2026 school year. Can you please clarify?
Can I still answer “agree” even though it says 2024-2025?
Yes. Sounds like we missed that update.
If I am starting vet school August 26th of this year, 2025, am I eligible to apply for this scholarship? I know this scholarship is due August 31st, so I am not sure if I can apply because of the good academic standing rule.
Yes. You actually don’t have to be in good academic standing unless you win, and we don’t sort that out until beginning of October.
Ok, great! Thank you!
