Your earning potential is one of your greatest assets, but you never know when an illness or injury could take that away from you. Disability can strike anyone at any time, but the risks are even higher for physicians due to the long hours and occupational risks they face. That’s why disability insurance is so important—it ensures you continue receiving an income, even if you can't work due to an illness or injury.

But if you have a pre-existing condition, you may worry disability insurance isn’t an option for you. Fortunately, that isn’t necessarily the case—you can still obtain disability insurance with a pre-existing condition, though it may be more expensive.

What Is a Pre-Existing Condition?

A pre-existing condition is any health problem that existed before you applied for a new disability insurance policy. These conditions tend to be chronic or long-term, like diabetes or asthma, but the exact definition can vary depending on your insurer. You’re required to inform insurance companies about any pre-existing conditions. Misrepresenting your health history can cause you to be denied coverage in the future.

Can You Get Disability Insurance with a Pre-Existing Condition?

Yes, you can qualify for disability insurance with a pre-existing condition, though it may be more difficult and expensive. Your insurer will consider your diagnosis, the severity, and any medical treatment you’re receiving.

How long you’ve had the condition can also play a big role in whether you’re approved. A recent diagnosis is often more problematic for insurance companies because there’s less certainty about the severity of the condition. On the other hand, your insurer may see a long-standing condition as less risky since you’ve been successfully managing it for many years.

However, not all pre-existing conditions are treated the same way, and the following conditions may make it harder for you to secure disability insurance:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Cancer
  • Kidney disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Arthritis

Does Group Disability Insurance Exclude Pre-Existing Conditions?

Yes, group disability insurance usually excludes any pre-existing conditions. So, if you manage to qualify for disability insurance and need to eventually file a claim, it will only be approved if your disability wasn’t caused by your pre-existing condition. However, this will depend on the specific policy and your circumstances.

Are Exclusions for Pre-Existing Conditions Permanent?

Exclusions for pre-existing conditions are usually permanent but not always. Some policies may include a clause stating that the exclusion can be reconsidered or removed after a certain period of time.

For instance, let’s say you were diagnosed with a pregnancy-related condition, like gestational diabetes. If you remain symptom-free for many years, any exclusions may fall off your policy.

How to Apply for Disability Insurance with a Pre-Existing Condition

Qualifying for disability insurance with a pre-existing condition can be challenging, but it isn’t impossible. Start by talking to your employer to see if they offer group disability coverage. You may be able to at least qualify for short-term disability insurance, which doesn’t usually require a medical exam.

If you can’t get a policy through your employer, you may want to work with an independent agent. This person can shop around for different policies on your behalf. And since they work with many different insurers, an independent broker will know which companies tend to be more lenient about pre-existing conditions. You can also look for supplemental policies to fill in any gaps in coverage.

Another option is obtaining a Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) insurance policy. GSI disability insurance aims to bridge the gap between a fully underwritten individual policy and a group disability policy, offering accessibility to those with pre-existing conditions while providing some customization (though not to the extent of individual insurance). With GSI, there's no need for a medical exam. It's a breeze for those with a history of medical conditions, and it may be a smart option for those without medical conditions to consider.

Most importantly, don’t get discouraged and give up. It may take extra effort, but the peace of mind that comes with disability insurance is worth it.
