His residency is 5 years and I will be moving up there after my residency in 3 years. The housing market is pretty cheap and we are looking to buy something that is less than 100k. For him to rent, it would be at least 1,000 per month.

With those numbers you’re likely to come out ahead buying but it won’t be by much and as mentioned above quality of life is much more important than saving a few thousand dollars during residency.
Use NYT rent vs. buy calculator to make an educated choice numbers-wise but remember that it doesn’t take into account quality of life.
