I received three emails today informing me that Amanda Liu, aka Debt Free Doc aka Dr. Wise Money has passed away. I have no details about the cause of death and don’t wish to dwell on it. However, it seems appropriate to say a few kind words.

My first contact from Amanda was in January of 2014 when she sent me an email like those I get every day. I reproduce part of it below:

    Dear Dr. Dahle,

Thank you very much for this very helpful website. I’ve learning a lot from it.

I’m graduating this fall, with 75000 student loan and 40000 personal loan. I plan to pay the personal loan after residency. I wanted to ask you some advice on whether to buy or rent and if so how to best position myself for mortgage….I will be supporting my 6 year old, my partner on one resident’s check starting 6/2014….I live like a student and plan to do so until I become an attending. The only big ticket item i have outside of housing is my kid’s classes and childcare (400-500/mo)….

My email box shows we exchanged 407 emails, not counting each other’s blog posts, over the ensuing 3 years, on dozens of financial, blogging, and family subjects. She often flattered me with praise, calling me “her mentor,” “the godfather of physician personal finance,” and her “financial hero.” She has published 161 blog posts, and reportedly had enough written to last through next April. She is one of the most productive bloggers I know, as I cannot imagine running a blog half as successful as hers as a resident. In addition she pumped out a half dozen books and was generating an amount from her “side gigs” that rivaled her resident physician salary.

6 months ago she was getting 61,000 page views a month and so was obviously reaching thousands of physicians with her message of frugality, entrepreneurship, debt-free living, and taking control of your financial life. She loved her 9 year old daughter (affectionately referred to on the blog as Mini Wise Money) and cared for her elderly, not-so-well-to-do parents. Her enthusiasm for personal finance was palpable and infectious.

She has posted three guest posts on this site, but my favorite was always her first:

    She featured me here:

I met her in person (along with her father) when I spoke at the U of Arizona, where she was a radiology resident. She was personable, pleasant, articulate and enthusiastic. At the time of her death, she was making a valuable contribution to her family, society, and certainly to the physician financial blogosphere. I’ll miss you Amanda. May you rest in peace.

    Absolutely heartbreaking.

Anyway of creating a college scholarship fund for her daughter that the WCI community could donate to?

Amanda was special to me as she was to so many. Although I hadn’t known her nearly as long or as well as others, we had communicated and collaborated on a few posts. She had such a warm, vibrant, absolutely enthusiastic spirit and it’s hard to believe her light is gone. She packed a lot of life into a very few years. Would love to support a scholarship fund. As I understand, one of her friends is going to check with her parents for permission.

I was just starting to read her blog and getting to “know her”.  Thank you for letting us know.  Prayers for her family and daughter.

I heard the rumor Monday, received confirmation yesterday, and am still trying to wrap my head around the news today. So tragic.

From reading her blog, she clearly knew how to live a meaningful life. Our correspondence only goes back about 7 months and includes a few dozen e-mails, a Q&A guest post swap, and some friendly advice when she asked for it related to her blog / youtube ventures.

I’ll be honoring her in some way in The Sunday Best this weekend, and will pray for her family and daughter.

I had not heard.  Thanks for sharing the info – even though it is horrific.

She was wise beyond her years.  She had such a promising career and life ahead of her.  She was way too young to go.

I saw via the Facebook Physician Mom Group that an attending in her program is also looking into setting up a fund for her daughter.  If something is in the works via WCI it might be nice to see if it could be coordinated with the fund through her program.

I did not know Amanda but read many of her blogs and postings and I can’t imagine what her family is going through.

If you are wanting to coordinate something I can put you in touch with one of her co-residents, as she is a very good friend of mine (the co-resident, didnt know amanda personally) and would know who the appropriate parties are I assume.
