I need to learn how to TLH!

    Me too!

well what are you waiting for?

step 1: sell all of what you have now

step 2: use proceeds from step 1 to buy a similar but not substantially identical fund

    any questions?

Even easier: 1- sell everything with a loss. 2- do nothing for 31 days. 3- buy back.

In case finding partners is too much…

finding a fund to buy back in is just as easy as counting to 31 days  😉

i know, some people dont want that (extra) effort.

My early resolution for 2019 is to stop committing TLH errors.  I just realized I sold $30k of stock, but since it was all bought in the last 60 days, the dividend I received at the end of last month is now ALL unqualified.

I hate when I do that.

    This stuff is hard.

    See “qualified dividends”

That will probably cost me about $70 (bang head emoji)

The dividends are not reinvested. Still an expensive mistake. I should have waited until I held them for 61 days.
I hate dividends. One reason I try to buy securities that pay them only once a year.

Right but as long as the gains arent over what you’ve harvested you should be ok. Dividends are annoying, I try not to hold anything with a dividend in taxable.

International markets off over 2% today, on top of the drop late last week. I just exchanged IXUS for VXUS, after doing the reverse back in June.

Arrgh, just did it yesterday for the second time in a month. Currently in 79% developed markets and 21% emerging markets, already been in the FTSE fund and the TISM fund. I guess I could go Europe/Pacific/EM Select….or just wait a couple of weeks and hope the rebound isn’t too fast.

I did the exact same thing, should have waited a day damnit!

    Re: the 60 day issue

So if I bought shares in August and got dividends in Sept, I can avoid this by not selling the shares I bought in August?
