I am interested in giving around 10k each to a few different small(ish) charities because I support their mission. They are too small for a rating on charity navigator, but I do know some of the folks involved in running the charities and their work.

Anyone have any advice about how to evaluate these kinds of charities, and what questions (if any) to politely ask?

Asking what percentage of funds go towards the actual charity mission would be the most important.

Check out GuideStar. They seem to have a larger database than Charity Nav.
