    Gas grills are just inverted broilers,

    My advice buy another house just for grilling.  You can afford it, call it the grill house.  Someone with this much passion for grilling should never be limited to gas.

      Not sure the exact model you are speaking of, nor am I exactly a smoker person (leave that to my neighbor who grew up in Texas).  IMO a grill and smoker are separate cooking tools.  Like investing and insurance, don’t mix the two tools.

      The basic decision is charcoal/wood pellets vs. gas.  It's like telling a 3rd year medical student their first decision is medicine vs. surgery.

      I will concede the point that using a gas grill with added smoke (A-maze-n, or some such product), may be looked down upon by the meat-smoking purists.  The reality is that almost everybody will use a gas grill much, much more than they would a charcoal or wood-pellet fueled solution.  So this is the first real lifestyle decision in the process.  You are going to use gas more.

      After something has smoked for 3-4 hours, it probably isn't absorbing a lot more smoke/flavor at that point anyway.  For low & slow cooking/smoking, after 4 hours of smoke, I will sometimes bring it inside and finish cooking in the oven (don't judge me).  Especially for items when I anticipate a total cooking time of 12-18 hours.  You want that brisket to be tender right?

      Combining a gas grill with an added smoke generator is the perfect combo for me.

          some of the fancier pellet grills have an open flame mode, like the fancy Memphis grill, there are others

          anyone used one of the new infrared gas grills? Saw one that could heat to like 900 in 10 mins

              I am going to pay $83 to have the amazon "pro" assemble it right after he carries the heavy thing onto my deck! I hope he has a partner to deliver this thing (heavy). Assembly time is listed as average time required 3-4 hours. For $83 that is a no brainer!

                Thank you for this thread. Similar to a new TV, I've been meaning to replace my ancient blue light special grill. I as well use it often. I was hoping to see if there was any experience with these: http://www.grillworksusa.com/products

                  Those modified parilla grills look awesome.  Bobby flay used to have a show on food network where he had like 7 different grills on a rooftop, and that was one of them.  I had no idea how expensive they could be.  That show was awesome, I miss when food network had instructional shows.

                    There's gotta be more to those grillworks than I'm seeing. From this view, it looks like $13000 of minimal metal and a pulley system that, materials aside, has been around since the dark ages.

                    Is it showing an exploded view or something? Maybe the metal is tank-grade steel, blessed by the grill gods and consecrated with fat from the holy pork butt?

                    Teach me, disciples of grill. How is that worth so much money?

                            amaz-e-n is ok I guess, I'm not in love with it...  it's finicky and requires practice, don't overfill it with pellets or the fire will spill over the barriers and the whole tray will ignite.  you'll have to play with your vents to ensure it gets enough air to keep smoking without losing temp control.  and use a butane torch to ignite it, keep it on the end for a solid 30-60 seconds to get it nice and lit

                            i love grillgrates - can easily set up indirect zone, beautiful sear marks, smokes quite well, excellent heat control, cleans up easily

                                I have had a Weber Genesis II for a while now and love it. I got the similar unit but without side-burner which I never use.  Like the Weber much better than the Vermont Castings grill that we have at cottage.  With your NW and apparent frugality I would go for it... Blow that Dough!
